Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW used the long-ball today in a double-header sweep of Grace College at Mastodon Field. The 'Dons took the opener 5-2 and captured the nightcap 13-4.
In the opener, the Mastodons spotted the Lancers a 1-0 lead in the first, but that was quickly erased by a lead-off home run by freshman second baseman Mark Carden. It was Carden's first round-tripper of the year.
Grace took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on an RBI single from third baseman Chay Bailey.
IPFW would break it open in the 5th inning on a three-run blast from junior center fielder Jared Davis. It was Davis' third bomb of the campaign.
Freshman short stop Ryan Beer gave IPFW an insurance run in the 6th inning with an RBI single, making the final 5-2.
Reliever Matt Ransbottom came on in the fourth and pitched three innings of no-hit ball for his second win of the season.
Grace starter Greg Priode took the loss.
In game two, it was all freshman first baseman Shaun VanDriessche.
In the second inning, VanDriessche went yard for his second homer of the season, a solo shot, giving the 'Dons a 1-0 lead.
Grace tied it in the 3rd inning on an RBI bunt single by center fielder Hans Griepentrog.
That set the stage for more VanDriessche heroics in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded, VanDriessche blasted a 450 foot homer to center field. The grand slam made it 6-1.
VanDriessche drove in two-more in the 6th, finishing the game with 7 RBI as the 'Dons cruised to the 13-4 win.
Starter Matt Antos pitched four complete, giving up just one run on one hit for his second win of the season.
With the sweep, IPFW improves to 8-26.
They return to action, tomorrow, hosting Bowling Green at 3:00pm.
