Fort Wayne, IN - The University of Toledo women's soccer team improved to 4-2-1 with a 5-0 shutout of IPFW, on Friday night at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
Toledo wasted no time taking the advantage in the match, scoring just :38 in on a goal by senior forward Sarah Schulte. Schulte took a pass from sophomore forward Molly Cornwell and parked the ball top-shelf from 15 yards out.
The Rockets took a 2-0 lead in the 12th minute as Cornwell got her second assist of the match. Cornwell toed up a free kick from about 25 yards out that senior defender Pene Hughes headed past IPFW keeper Malinda Holmer.
Schulte got her second goal of the match at the 36:34 mark, picking up a loose ball at the top of the box and sliding it just under the cross bar.
Toledo was excellent in the air and with their heads. In the second half, UT got a pair of goals off of headers, one from sophomore forward Ali Leak at the 49:01 mark and their last tally from freshman midfielder Erin Flynn in the 79th minute.
Cornwell assisted on the Leak goal, giving her a three-point night.
The goaltending tandem of sophomore Andrea Plewes and freshman Angela Righeimer combined for the shutout. Each keeper played a half and turned back the only IPFW shot they faced.
Toledo outshot IPFW 23-7 in the match.
Holmer made 10 saves for the Mastodons in the loss.
IPFW remains winless at 0-7-0. The play one more non-conference match (at DePaul on Sunday afternoon) before beginning Summit League play on September 30 vs. Western Illinois.
