
'Dons Drop Heartbreaker at South Dakota State

Brookings, SD - IPFW opened up 2008 with a Summit League game at South Dakota State in the first of a three game road swing. The Jackrabbits pulled ahead at the half, 37-32, and the Mastodons couldn't shake the halftime lead, falling 68-62.
The Jackrabbits started the game with a 9-0 run before extending it to a double digit lead just a short time later at the 15:24 mark, 12-1. Jordan Zuppe hit a lay-up to cut the Jacks lead to nine, 12-3. The 'Dons continued that momentum, scoring the next five points to cut the lead to four, 12-8.
The Mastodons continued to cut into the Jacks lead and took it a single point after two free throws by Juliane Höhne, 19-18. The Jacks would make two free throws of their own to increase their lead to three, 21-18. Nanyamka Moore hit a jumper 30 seconds later to again cut the lead to one with 8:27 left in the half.
The Jacks would score the next eight points, almost taking a late double digit lead, 29-20. A late basket by Johnna Lewis-Carlisle would cut the Jacks lead to two, 34-32 before SDSU would score the final basket of the half to finish ahead by five, 37-32.
South Dakota State started the second half with a 4-0 run, before Natalie Roberts made a basket at the 17:23 mark, 41-34. The Jacks would take their first double digit lead of the half three minutes later, 44-34. Lewis-Carlisle would quickly cut the lead to eight with 14:38 left.
The 'Dons would begin to cut away at the eight point difference, with Lewis-Carlisle taking to a two point spread with free throws at the 10:11 mark. She would then score the next four points for IPFW to cut the lead to one, 53-52, with just under nine minutes left in the game.
SDSU would get a late 6-0 run to push ahead by seven, 59-52 with 6:07 left. The Mastodons would pull within three on a lay-up by Chelsey Jackson, but the Jacks would hold on for the win, 68-62.
Lewis-Carlisle led all scorers with 22 points, her sixth this season with 20 plus points. She was 8 of 21 from the field and perfect at the line, 4-4.
Zuppe hit double digits with 14 points, matching her personal best of 4 three pointers made.
Roberts led on defense with 10 rebounds. She almost had a double-double, scoring eight points.
SDSU finished with one double-double and two others in double digit points.
Maria Boever hit a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards. Ashlea Muckenhirn scored 12 points and Jennifer Warkenthien connected for eleven.
The Mastodons (4-8, 2-1 Summit) will now head to North Dakota State for a 7 PM Central tip-off on Monday, January 7th. They will then head to Detroit for a 7 PM game on Wednesday, January 9th.
Their next home game is Saturday, January 12th. The 'Dons will host the Centenary Ladies, a Summit League conference foe, at 4 PM in a doubleheader at the Memorial Coliseum.
