Fort Wayne, IN- Today was Senior Day at Hefner Field, featuring IPFW seniors Heather Currie and Danielle Orlandella. Unfortunately, the Mastodons couldn't send the two off with a win.
The IPFW women's soccer team was defeated this afternoon by the Oakland Grizzlies 6-1, at Hefner Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This was the final home game this season for the Mastodons.
The contest was scoreless until the 15th minute, when Grizzly forward Jessica Boyle broke free from the IPFW defense, and fired a shot past IPFW goalkeeper Kristen McFadden, to make the score 1-0. From here, the game was controlled on both ends by Oakland. One minute later, the Grizzlies found the scoreboard again after Sarah Lynch scored off a middle pass from Jessica Boyle, to make the score 2-0. In the 32nd minute, Amy Trandell beat McFadden one-on-one with a shot to the right post, to make the score 3-0. When first half ended, the scoreboard read: Oakland 3, IPFW 0.
The second half featured all the same qualities as the first half. Oakland continued its offensive attack three minutes into the second half after Sarah Lynch scored her second goal of the day, to make the score 4-0. Unfortunately for the Mastodons, Lynch wasn't finished. In the 55th minute, Lynch scored her third goal of the day after firing a shot over new IPFW goalkeeper Meagan McLaughlin, to make the score 5-0. Four minutes later, the Grizzlies scored their final goal off a penalty kick from Kristi Evans. With 30 minutes remaining, Oakland had a 6-0 lead. The `Dons reached the scoreboard in the 65th minute, when Brittni Roy's shot deflected off Oakland goalkeeper Shannon Coley, and then fired back into the goal by IPFW freshman Justine LeBlanc. The goal was LeBlanc's first on the season, and only goal on the afternoon for the `Dons.
When the final horn sounded, the scoreboard read: Oakland 6, IPFW 1. In the loss, the `Dons were outshot 27-7, and failed to fire a corner kick on the afternoon. IPFW received shots on goal from LeBlanc with two, and Tammi Kerr with one.
Next up for the women's soccer team is a road game this Tuesday, October 14, against Detroit-Mercy. Match time is set for 4:00 p.m. ET
