Muncie, IN – The IPFW Mastodons dropped their second straight match to an in-state rival, falling to the Cardinals of Ball State University 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 26-24), evening their record at 11-11 on the season.
No Mastodon attacker recorded double figure kills, as the team was led by Rebekah Roehm’s eight kills, with Maya Schlindwein adding seven. Jessica Dominiak and Shannon Reuter had 13 and 12 service aces, each, while Taryn Parker had a team-high three service aces and four total blocks.
IPFW fell behind 2-0 in the opening set, before the ‘Dons scored three straight to take a 3-2 lead. The teams battled back-and-forth and IPFW trailed by one at 7-6 before the hosts opened a 6-0 run to push ahead 13-6. IPFW attempted to claw back, climbing to within as many as three, but the deficit was too much, as Ball State ended the frame on a 4-0 run to claim a 25-18 first-set victory.
In the second set IPFW trailed 10-7, and after a timeout, the ‘Dons ran off six consecutive points to take a 13-10 lead. The advantage would be short lived; however, as Ball State used a 4-0 run of their own to knot the set at 14. The teams went back-and-forth the rest of the way, with the teams tied at 22 before Ball State scored the final three points of the set, taking a 25-22 victory into the break in the match.
The ‘Dons came out flat to start the third set, and trailed 15-6 before an 8-0 IPFW run cut the deficit to one at 15-14. IPFW eventually took a two-point, 19-17 lead, and served for set point at 24-23 before the Cardinals once again ended the set on a flurry, this one 3-0, to claim the match after a 26-24 third-set win.
Ball State was led by Elaina Kakatolis who had 11 kills, while Alisha Green added nine. Brittany McGinnis dished out 38 assists, with Hannah Sullivan picking up 12 digs and Jennifer Boyd blocking a match-high seven kill attempts.
The ‘Dons look to break out of their current losing skid on Friday, October 24, when they take to the road against Oakland University with first-serve set for 7:00 PM.
