Rochester, MI – A marathon opening set the tone for a tight match featuring two evenly matched teams, as the IPFW Mastodons won 3-0 (35-33, 25-22, 25-21) over the Oakland Grizzlies in a Summit League matchup, improving the ‘Dons to 12-11 on the year and 7-3 in league play.
Rebekah Roehm dominated to the tune of 19 kills and 18 digs, her 10th double-double of the season. Maya Schlindwein finished with nine kills, while Taryn Parker and Ashley Dillon ended the match with seven kills each. Jessica Dominiak dished out a match-high 36 assists, with three players, Roehm, Shannon Reuter, and Christine Simon finishing with a pair of service aces. Jamie Schwartz dug up a match-high-tying 19 kill attempts. Adding to the defense was Parker and Schlindwein who each had three blocks, with Kylee Hervey chipping in a pair.
Oakland opened the first set strong, leading at 3-2, before IPFW scored two straight to take a 4-3 lead. The Grizzlies pushed back ahead at 6-5 before IPFW scored three straight to take an 8-6 lead. Oakland battled back to tie the match at 10, before IPFW ran off runs of 3-0 and 6-0 to lead by as many as seven at 20-13. The Grizzlies, on their home court, roared back by scoring the next six points to cut the deficit to one at 20-19 before an Oakland attack error stopped the bleeding; however, another 3-0 run gave the hosts a 22-21 lead.
Back-to-back kills by Roehm gave IPFW a one-point, 23-22 advantage. Neither team would grab more than a two-point lead over the remainder of the set until the ending score. The two teams blew past the typical stopping point of 25, blowing past last years’ starting spot of 30, as the teams found themselves tied at 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, and 33, before a Dillon kill and a combo block by Parker and Schlindwein ended the marathon set with an IPFW 35-33 frame victory. The 68 points in the set was the highest total by IPFW since the ‘Dons and Eastern Michigan battled to a 37-35 set on October 3, 2006.
The second set looked to be a repeat of the first, with Oakland leading by just one at 13-12, before IPFW went on runs of 3-0 and 2-0, separated by just an Oakland kill. Trailing 17-14, the Golden Grizzlies would not let the ‘Dons pull away, scoring four of the next five points to tie the set at 18 apiece. IPFW yo-yo’d to another lead, this one 23-20, before Oakland closed the gap to one at 23-22 until a pair of Parker kills sent the ‘Dons into the locker room with a 25-22 second-set win.
Continuing a trend throughout the match, the two teams battled early and often in the third set, as the frame saw 11 ties through the first 24 total points, as the teams were knotted at 12. A 4-0 run gave IPFW a 15-12 lead, forcing an Oakland timeout, as the teams traded sideouts following the break, until Oakland scored two straight to cut the deficit to one at 17-16. IPFW led by one at 18-17 before a 2-0 run pushed the visitors ahead 20-17. Another 2-0 run, this one by Oakland, once again cut the ‘Don lead to a solitary point at 20-19. The teams traded points, sending the score to 21-20, before an IPFW 2-0 run, followed by another 2-0 stretch, finalized by a Roehm kill, ended the final set with a 25-21 IPFW win.
Oakland was led by Adrienne Leone and Amy Golem, who had 11 and 10 kills, each. Katy Wilson dished out 24 assists, with Samantha Filipek added 14. Brittany Dunn, in the match due to an illness to All-Summit League libero Lauren Duquette, finished with 19 digs, with Wilson adding 12 for her double-double. Leah Dupuie finished with a match-high eight blocks, with Leone adding five in the losing effort.
After their four-match road swing, IPFW returns to the Hilliard Gates Sports Center for a weekend double header against Oral Roberts on October 31 and against Centenary on November 1, with both first serves set for 7:00 PM.
