Fort Wayne, IN- In a game that featured 30 shots and only one goal, the IPFW women’s soccer team was defeated by non-conference opponent Youngstown State Penguins 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Hefner Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Mastodons will restart conference play Friday at Western Illinois.
The lone goal in the match came two minutes into the second half from Penguin Lauren Brennan, who broke free from the IPFW defense and fired a shot to the right post, to make the score 1-0. The ‘Dons had their chances all afternoon to draw the score even, but none of the shots could find the back of the net.
Despite the loss, the ‘Dons had 14 shots and 11 shots on goal. IPFW received fine play from its seniors, Heather Currie and Danielle Orlandella. Currie made crisp passes all afternoon and fired two shots on goal. Orlandella fired one shot on goal and was in on many key plays throughout the afternoon. The ‘Dons also received shots on goal from its large group of freshmen: Tara O’Toole (2), Justine LeBlanc (2), Brittany Climmons (1), Melanie Esposito (1) and Kari Gotschall (2). Freshman goalkeeper Kristen McFadden had seven saves in the contest.
Next up for IPFW is a road match against Western Illinois this Friday, October 10. Game time is set for 5 pm ET, 4 pm CT.
