Shreveport, LA - Crystina Martinez and twin sister Crystal placed first and second at the 2008 Summit League Cross Country Championships Saturday in Shreveport, Louisiana, but the Mastodons fell three points short of defending their 2007 team co-championship.
Overall, IPFW placed second behind 2008 Team Champion South Dakota State University. The aptly named Jackrabbits were third last season behind the 'Dons and Southern Utah.
Crystina Martinez again broke the IPFW school record for the 6K with a championship time of 20:54.9.
Crystal Martinez was more than 15-seconds better than third place Laura Hermanson of North Dakota State in a time of 21:01.7.
Unfortunately for IPFW, their third, fourth, and fifth place finishers were bunched together in 19th, 20th, and 21st.
All running great races, freshman Alexandra Paul was 19th in a time of 22:15.9, sophomore Felicia Mondry was 20th at 22:15.1 and freshman Sarah Hutchings posted a 22:17.6 for 21st. Every Mastodon posted a time below their personal bests for a 6K.
Both Martinez sisters were named First-Team All Conference.
"The women ran an outstanding race," Head Coach Mike Fruchey said. "The twins (Crystina and Crystal) went out right from the beginning and said 'come catch us if you can', and no one could. We had a lower team score than last year, and I'm really excited to see how we perform a the NCAA Regionals in two weeks."
The NCAA Regionals will be held at Purdue University.
