
'Dons Drop Season Finale

Kalamazoo, MI - Despite a team-high 17 kills from junior Rebekah Roehm, the IPFW Mastodons (16-15) fell in their season finale to the RedHawks of Miami (20-11) by a 3-1 score (25-20, 25-16, 24-26, 25-21).
Roehm tallied 17 kills for the fourth time in her final five matches, while also serving up four serves, tops in a match this season. Maya Schlindwein finished second on the team with eight kills, with freshman Ashley Dillon totaling seven. Playing in her final match in the Blue and White, setter Jessica Dominiak dished out 36 assists. Jamie Schwartz led the team with 28 digs, with Dillon pulling up 11. Schlindwein and Kylee Hervey each had seven blocks, all assisted, with Jessica Miller and Taryn Parker teaming up with one.
In the opening set, IPFW jumped ahead 4-2 before Miami scored six consecutive points to lead 8-4, as the RedHawks would not trail again for the remainder of the contest. Miami kept pushing ahead, and seemed to have the set in the bag leading 23-14 before the 'Dons ran off six consecutive points, two of which came on Roehm service aces; however, Miami scored the final two points to close out the opener 25-20.
IPFW scored the first four points of the second frame, and led 4-0 until the RedHawks had runs of 8-0 and 4-0 to lead 12-5. The Miami lead grew to as many as 10 at 16-6 before the 'Dons mounted a comeback, closing to within five at 21-16 before Miami scored the final four points of the set to take a 2-0 lead rolling to a 25-16 second-set win.
The third set was a tight battle, as the teams were tied at 13 before IPFW ran off three straight to take a 16-13 advantage. The 'Dons would not give up their lead, although the RedHawks did tie the set at 24 apiece. IPFW responded with a combo block by Schlindwein and Hervey, and then used a Miami attack error to win the third set 26-24.
In the fourth and deciding set, IPFW cruised ahead to leads of 3-0 and 6-1 before Miami clawed back eventually tying the frame at 18 during the middle of a 4-0 run which gave the RedHawks a 20-18 lead. IPFW was able to get to within one at 20-19 and 22-21; however, a 3-0 Miami run ended the season for the 'Dons.
Megan Griffin led Miami with a game-high 18 kills, with Emily Schroeder and Hallie Hanks adding 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Maria Leahy and Melissa Zenz had 18 and 17 digs, each, with Griffin totaling a team-best five blocks.
The loss caps the season for IPFW with a 16-15 record, their sixth straight season with a winning record, and the 29th time in the 32 years of the program.
