Milwaukee, WI - Junior forward Lazar Hayward scored 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as No. 24 Marquette outdistanced IPFW, 69-50 on Saturday afternoon at the Bradley Center.
Golden Eagles (8-1) jumped out to an early 20-6 lead on IPFW at the 12:00 mark of the first half on a three pointer by senior guard Wesley Matthews.
IPFW answered by going on a 15-5 run over the next 5:30 to pull to within four at 25-21. The Mastodons made the run courtesy of the 3-pointer.
Sophomore guard Zach Plackemeier started off the stretch with a triple from the right side. IPFW's other sophomore guard, Ben Botts, finished off the run with a pair of triples. One was from NBA range.
But it was Hayward taking the game into his own hands and giving Marquette a comfortable lead at the half with his rebounding, three point shooting, and strong inside game. He had 11 points and 10 rebounds at the break, and the Golden Eagles owned a 38-25 edge.
Senior forward David Carson drained a three to open the second half, but that is as close as IPFW would come the rest of the way.
A Hayward layup with 10:20 left made it 58-35 and Marquette cruised on to the 19-point win.
Along with Hayward's team leading double-double, Marquette got 16 from Jerel McNeal, 13 from Matthews and 10 from guard Dominic James.
Carson led the `Dons with 17 points. Botts was the only other Mastodon in double-figures with 11. Junior forward Deilvez Yearby had a nice defensive effort with 11 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 4-6 on the season. They continue their current seven-game road trip with game five at Nebraska next Saturday night.
