Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW senior guard Johnna Lewis-Carlisle scored a career-high 34 points, but it wasn't enough as the Mastodons fell to South Dakota State in overtime, 74-72, Monday night in Summit League action at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
It was the second heart-breaking two point loss for the 'Dons in the last two games. On Saturday, IPFW lost to North Dakota State, 67-65.
IPFW led by four going into the break and never trailed in the half.
Things were looking good for the Mastodons as late as the 3:31 mark of regulation. Senior forward Juliane Hohne scored a pair of buckets to give the 'Dons a 62-56 lead.
South Dakota State, who went to the foul line 31 times in the contest, used a short jumper from junior forward Jennifer Warkenthien and four consecutive freebies to tied the game at 65 with under :30 to go.
The Jackrabbits had the ball and a chance to win, but Warkenthien's layup with :05 left was blocked by senior forward Natalie Roberts, and we went to overtime.
In the overtime session, IPFW opened up a, 69-65 lead courtesy of a Roberts layup.
But SDSU freshman forward Kristin Rotert scored seven consecutive points, including a clutch triple, giving the Jacks a 73-70 lead with :19 left.
Lewis-Carlisle got the Mastodons to with one on the next trip, getting a driving layin to go.
South Dakota State's Andrea Verdegan made one of two free throws with 10 second left making it 74-72.
IPFW had the ball and a chance to tie or win, but the 'Dons turned it over as time expired.
The loss ruined a career night for Lewis-Carlisle and for Hohne. The senior forward registered a double-double of 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Roberts was two-points shy of her own double-double, scoring eight while hauling down 10 rebounds.
Warkenthien paced the Jackrabbits (16-6, 9-2 SL) with 29 points. Rotert added 12, while sophomore forward Maria Boever chipped in 10.
With the loss, the Mastodons fall to 9-13 overall and 6-5 in league play.
IPFW now hits the road for their next three games. The first of the three game roadie will be on Saturday at Oral Roberts. Game time is 3:05 p.m.
