Indianapolis, IN - The Butler Bulldogs got two in the eighth, and the game winner in the tenth, to cap a 5-4 comeback win over IPFW on Tuesday afternoon at Bulldog Park.
The loss, IPFW's fourth straight, drops the 'Dons to 2-14-1 on the season. IPFW has lost its last three by a total of four runs.
The Bulldogs (4-11) opened the scoring in the 3rd inning. Senior left fielder Ryan McLaughlin singled through the left side off of IPFW starter Tyler Baatz scoring two.
The Mastodons came roaring back in the fourth.
Butler starter Jamie Feldheiser ran into some serious control problems. He hit the first two batters of the 4th inning, Garrett Segraves and Jared Davis. In fact, Davis had the misfortune of being plunked three times in the contest.
IPFW senior left fielder Aaron Kerns made Feldheiser pay for his wildness. Kerns turned on a fastball up in the zone and deposited it over the left field fence to give IPFW a 3-2 lead.
The Mastodons made it 4-2 on an RBI single from junior catcher Devin Taylor. Taylor's base knock to center plated sophomore third baseman Jason Doerffler.
However, the 'Dons defense let them down in the 8th inning. IPFW was charged with three errors in the frame as Butler scored two runs without a hit, tying the game at four.
McLaughlin walked to lead off the Butler tenth. He was sacrificed to second and scored the winning run on a double by second baseman Jason Jamerson.
The Bulldogs pounded out ten hits against IPFW pitching.
Butler junior reliever Joe Ochs got the win, his first of the season, throwing three innings of one-hit ball.
IPFW reliever Chad Nielsen (0-2) was tagged with the loss. In 1-1/3 innings, he gave up one run on one hit, while walking two.
The Mastodons return to action on Wednesday afternoon at Michigan. Game time in Ann Arbor is 3:05 p.m.
