Fort Wayne, IN – The IPFW Mastodons, now 5-7 on the season, won their fourth consecutive match, improving to 2-0 in the Summit League with a four-set victory over the Oakland Grizzlies (3-10, 0-2 Summit) by scores of 22-25, 25-16, 26-24, and 25-20.
Rebekah Roehm and Maya Schlindwein each finished the match with a team-high 10 kills, with Jessica Miller adding seven. Four players, Jamie Schwartz (22), Roehm (17), Ashley Dillon (12), and Shannon Reuter (10) each finished with double figure digs, with Reuter’s marking a double-double as she dished out 16 assists, second on the squad behind Jessica Dominiak’s 18.
Dominiak and Dillon each aced a trio of serves, while Taryn Parker and Miller each finished the four-set match with five total blocks.
In the opening set, Oakland jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before the ‘Dons clawed back, using a 5-0 run to turn an 8-4 deficit into a 9-8 advantage. The set was nip-and-tuck the rest of the way, with the two teams sitting even at 19 points apiece before Oakland opened a 3-0 run to push ahead 22-19, as the teams traded points to give Oakland the 25-22 first-set win.
The ‘Dons came out firing on all cylinders to open the second set, scoring the first 10 points of the set, including three service aces by Dominiak. Oakland fought back, closing to within five on two separate occasions; however, the early IPFW advantage was too much with the ‘Dons taking the second set by a 25-16 score.
The third set was tight for the first half of the frame, with the teams tied at 10, before Oakland opened a 6-1 run to push ahead to 16-11. The ‘Dons fought back to tie the set at 18 and 19, before the Grizzlies went on another run, this one 3-0 to give the visitors a 22-19 lead. With Oakland in firm control of the momentum, and just three points away from the set victory, the ‘Dons quickly turned the tables, out-scoring their opponent 7-2 over the remainder of the frame, and winning 26-24.
In the fourth and eventual match-deciding set, each team held an early three-point lead, IPFW at 4-1 and Oakland at 12-9. The Grizzles led by one at 20-19 before IPFW finished the match on a 6-0 run, including a trio of service aces from freshman Dillon.
Oakland was led by Stephanie Parkin, who had 14 kills and 11 digs, while Adrienne Leone finished the match with 10 kills. Brittany Dunn dug up a game-high 27 kill attempts, with Katy Wilson and Parkin adding 13 and 11, respectively, while Leah Dupuie finished with a team-best five blocks.
The ‘Dons look to carry their current four-match win streak along with them as they make a road swing to Shreveport, Louisiana and Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they will face the Ladies of Centenary on Friday, September 26 before meeting the Summit League preseason favorite Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on Saturday, September 27.
