
IPFW Breezes Past Centenary 3-0

Shreveport, LA – The IPFW Mastodons won their fifth consecutive match of the 2008 season, sweeping the Ladies of Centenary (2-12, 0-3 Summit League) by a 3-0 score (25-16, 25-15, 25-14) to improve to 6-7 overall on the season and a perfect 3-0 in conference play.
Freshman Ashley Dillon was the only ‘Don with double figure kills with 10, while hitting at a .381 percentage (2 errors and 21 attempts). Rebekah Roehm, the defending Summit League Offensive Player of the Week, finished the match with eight kills with Taryn Parker totaling six. Overall IPFW hit a percentage of .300 for the contest, after 37 kills, just 10 errors on 90 attempts.
Setters Jessica Dominiak and Shannon Reuter finished the match with 18 and 12 assists apiece, with Dominiak serving up a season-high four aces, giving her a team-high 14 on the season. Jamie Schwartz, the defending Defensive Player of the Week in the conference, finished with 13 digs, tied for the game-high, with Reuter and Roehm finishing with a half dozen apiece. Parker had a hand in four blocks to lead the team, with Dillon and Maya Schlindwein adding a pair of block assists.
In the opening set, IPFW trailed only at 1-0 as the ‘Dons rallied from their brief deficit by scoring five straight points to jump ahead 5-1. The host Ladies cut the deficit to two on five other occasions, including as late as 9-7 before IPFW scored ten of the next 13 points to take a 19-11 lead, cruising to the 25-16 first-set victory.
IPFW scored the first five points of the second set, and never relinquishing the lead for the remainder of the frame. Centenary closed the gap to one at 5-4 and 6-5, before IPFW followed with a 10-4 run, pushing ahead by seven at 16-9, keeping their foot on the gas pedal for the 25-15 second-set win.
Centenary put up a fight early in the third and deciding set, leading by one at 2-1, 3-2, and 4-3, until IPFW opened a 6-1 run to lead 9-5. IPFW was unable to put together any lengthy stretches of points, but used enough three- and four-point runs to help sweep the Ladies at bay with a third-set score of 25-14.
Bethany Kern led Centenary with 10 kills, while Brianna Kern totaled seven, with the pair coming up with 17 of the team’s 27 total kills. Jaclyn Lopez dished out a match-high 20 assists, with Brianna Kern serving up a pair of aces. Bethany Kern picked up a team-best 13 digs for the double-double, while Erika Lunsford had three of the team’s five blocks.
The ‘Dons take to the court on Saturday evening, when they make the trek to Tulsa, Oklahoma to take on the Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts University, the preseason Summit League favorite according to the league’s nine coaches in the preseason poll.
