
IPFW Falls 3-0 to Oral Roberts

Tulsa, OK – The IPFW Mastodons (6-8, 3-1 Summit League) saw their five-match win streak snapped at the hands of the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (9-5, 3-1 Summit) in three sets, 27-25, 25-17, 25-18.
The ‘Dons were led by senior Jessica Miller, who ended the match with nine kills, while Ashley Dillon and Maya Schlindwein had seven and six kills, respectively. Jessica Dominiak dished out 13 assists in the losing effort, with Shannon Reuter adding eight. Dominiak added to her team leading total with two service aces, with her and Rebekah Roehm leading IPFW with seven digs. Taryn Parker finished the match with four total blocks to lead the team.
The teams traded points to open the first set, with IPFW scoring a point, and the Golden Eagles countering through the first 10 of the frame. With the teams tied at five, IPFW ran off five consecutive tallies to push ahead to a 10-5 advantage. Following IPFW’s run, Oral Roberts opened one of their own at, a 4-0 variety, to cut the deficit to one at 10-9. A 3-0 Mastodon rusponse pushed the visitors ahead by four at 13-9 until the Golden Eagles answered back by scoring four straight, tying the match at 13 apiece. A 6-2 IPFW streak pushed the IPFW lead to 19-15 forcing an ORU timeout. The hosts regrouped and clawed back into the set, eventually tying the frame at 23 apiece, before taking a 24-23 lead a point later. With the Golden Eagles serving for set point, the ‘Dons rallied to score the next two points, putting themselves in a position to serve for set point at 25-24. ORU closed the match by scoring the final three points, giving the hosts a 27-25 first-set victory.
Leading the way for IPFW in the opening stanza was Miller who had five kills on seven attempts, while Schlindwein and Dillon had four and three kills apiece. Dominiak dished out seven assists, while Roehm and Dillon had a team-best two digs apiece. Parker assisted on two of the team’s three blocks in the frame.
The second set was a back-and-forth, nip-and-tuck battle throughout the first 30 points of the frame, with eight lead changes and 11 tied, the latest of which was at 15-15. Oral Roberts then opened up a 7-0 run to push ahead to a comfortable score of 22-15 before cruising to the 25-17 set win.
Miller once again led the pace for IPFW with three kills. Parker had a pair of kills in the frame, with Dominiak dishing out four assists while digging up four kill attempts. Parker added two more assisted blocks in the stanza. IPFW opened strong in the third set, jumping ahead 2-0 before the hosts ran out to a 5-0 run, pushing them ahead 5-2. The Golden Eagles increased their lead to as many as four at 12-8, before IPFW scored five consecutive points, forcing an ORU timeout after the ‘Dons took their first lead since the early workings of the frame at 13-12. Oral Roberts responded by out-scoring IPFW 13-5 the rest of the way to clinch the 3-0 Summit League victory.
Oral Roberts was led by Joanita Souza, who had 11 kills, while Talita Santos and Danijela Novakovic each had nine. Juliane Viera dished out 38 assists, while she and Janette Ferreira had 11 and 17 digs, apiece.
The ‘Dons are at home for a trio of games in the upcoming week, starting with Wright State University on Tuesday, September 30 starting at 7:00 PM. The weekend brings South Dakota State and North Dakota State to the Hilliard Gates Sports Center, with the latter of the two representing the “Think Pink” match, with $1 of every ticket sold going towards the research for a cure for breast cancer.
