
IPFW Holds on For Five-Set Victory

Fort Wayne, IN – The IPFW Mastodons (6-7) won the first two sets of their match against Wright State University (5-10), and held on to win the fifth and final frame, as the ‘Dons topped the Raiders 3-2 by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 22-25, 24-26, 15-10.
Freshman Ashley Dillon finished the match with a career-high 16 kills, while hitting to a percentage of .357 (one error on 42 attempts), with Jessica Miller finishing with 14 kills, two errors and 32 attempts for a percentage of .375. The latter of the pair’s attack percentage is the eighth highest five-set total in school history, while the former’s is tied for 14th highest. Rebekah Roehm also added 14 kills, along with a team-high three service aces and 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.
Jamie Schwartz dug up 25 kill attempts, a new career-high for the junior, and tied for the 16th highest five-set total for IPFW. Jessica Dominiak recorded her first double-double since the season opener with 49 assists and 16 digs, while Christine Simon narrowly missed her career high with 15 digs. Miller finished with a team-best five blocks, while Maya Schlindwein and Roehm each had four, with Roehm picking up a pair of solo stops.
IPFW never trailed in the opening set, with the Raiders and ‘Dons holding to a 2-2 tie in the early workings of the frame before IPFW scored four of the next five points to open a 6-3 lead. Wright State would claw their way back to within one at 12-11, forcing a timeout by the ‘Dons, which then spurned a 4-0 run to push the advantage to 16-11, as IPFW cruised to the 25-17 first-set win.
Roehm came out firing in the opening frame, leading the team with five kills with Dillon chipping in four. Dominiak dished out a dozen assists, with Dillon, Dominiak and Schwartz each totaling four digs.
Wright State jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead in the second set before the ‘Dons erupted for six straight points, pushing ahead to a 7-2 lead. The Raiders would only get as close as three, at 11-8, before IPFW answered by scoring five of the next six points, jumping ahead 16-9. A pair of 4-0 runs closed the door in the set on the Raiders, with the final streak representing the final four points of the second set.
Roehm continued her hot hitting with six kills, equaling the team total for the Raiders in the set, with Dillon and Miller each adding two, representing all 10 kills for the ‘Dons. Dominiak dished out nine assists, with Schwartz picking up seven digs.

IPFW jumped ahead in the third set, and held a lead for nearly the entire stanza. Despite constantly holding a lead, the ‘Dons were unable to push ahead by more than three, and led by two at 12-10 before the Raiders opened a 5-1 run to push ahead by two at 15-13. IPFW answered with an immediate 3-0 run to re-capture their lead, and did not trail again until the Raiders jumped ahead by a 23-22 score late in the frame. Wright State ended the third set on a 4-0 run, claiming a 25-22 victory.
Dillon had a team-best four kills, with Schlindwein adding three. Dominiak dished out nine assists, with Schwartz digging up nine kill attempts. The Achilles heel for the ‘Dons in the third set was service errors, as the team totaled six of them, over half of their entire match total of 10.
The Raiders jumped ahead early in the fourth set, leading by three early at 5-2 before IPFW clawed back, knotting the match at eight points apiece. Wright State saw the ‘Dons claim their first lead after a Dillon kill gave the hosts a 13-12 lead. Four straight points by Wright State gave the visitors from Dayton, Ohio, a 16-13 lead, after which IPFW answered with a 4-0 run of their own, pushing ahead 17-16. The set was back-and-forth the rest of the way, with the ‘Dons serving for match-point at 24-23; however, a 3-0 Raider run to end the frame gave the visitors a 26-24 victory.
Three players, Dillon, Miller and Kylee Hervey each had four kills in the fourth set, with Dominiak dishing out 12 assists. Roehm totaled nine digs to lead the team, as the squad rebounded from their poor serving set to not give up a point via a service error.
The fifth and final set, which is played to 15, saw Wright State jump ahead by two at 3-1, 5-3, and 8-6. Trailing by two as the teams traded benches, the ‘Dons erupted, out-scoring the visitors 9-2 the rest of the way, ending with a kill by Miller, giving the ‘Dons a victory in their first five-set match of the season.
Miller dominated in the fifth set with five kills, with Dillon and Schlindwein each adding two. Dominiak dished out seven assists, while Dillon led the team with three digs.
For the match, Wright State was led by Lexi Leonhard, who had 14 kills, with Becca Awaa chipping in a dozen. Michelle Hammond dished out 44 assists, with three players, Leonhard, Awaa and Leilani Tafuna each finishing the match with 20 digs. Lizzy Gunn blocked a team-best six kill attempts, with Tafuna serving up two aces to lead the squad.
The ‘Dons continue to play host through the weekend, as South and North Dakota State come into the Hilliard Gates Sports Center. South Dakota State provides the first opponent of the weekend on Friday, October 3, with first serve set for 7:00 PM, and that match is followed when North Dakota State comes to Fort Wayne on Saturday, October 4, in IPFW’s “Pink Out” match, where $1 of every ticket sold will be donated for breast cancer awareness.
