Shreveport, LA – The IPFW Mastodons were unable to snap out of their losing skid on Saturday afternoon, falling in Summit League action to the Ladies of Centenary by a score of 73-51.
The ‘Dons were led by freshman guard Anne Boese, who scored 17 points, hitting 5-of-9 from long range, with Jordan Zuppe adding eight. Tina Moen pulled down a team-best seven rebounds, with Courtney Reed dishing out four assists.
The teams struggled to reach the scoring column initially in the game, with the Ladies’ Ashley Jackson scoring first with 17:29 on the clock, before IPFW’s Maggie O’Connell countered with a basket nearly two minutes later to knot the score at two apiece.
On the next possession, Centenary’s Anne Ferrell converted an old-fashioned three-point play, giving the hosts a 5-2 lead, one which they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
After Courtney Reed hit a basket to cut the deficit to one at 5-4, the hosts ran off six straight points to push ahead 11-4 before Tina Moen ended the run with a three-point basket with 12:46, before Boese hit her first long-range jumper of the game to cut the deficit to one at 11-10 eight minutes into the contest.
The ‘Dons were twice able to get as close as two, the last time at 18-16 with 7:28 on the clock following an O’Connell free throw, before the Ladies went on an 8-0 run to push their lead to double figures at 26-16.
IPFW (2-13, 1-4 Summit League) would only be able to get as close as seven the rest of the way, as the ‘Dons went into halftime trailing by 11 at 35-24.
A 6-0 start to the second half pushed the Centenary (3-12, 1-3 Summit League) lead to 17 at 41-24, as IPFW would only get as close as 10 the rest of the way, as the Ladies cruised to the lopsided conference victory.
The Mastodons offense continued to struggle, hitting just 16-of-60 shots (26.7%) from the field, as IPFW has shot .400 or worse in each of their last seven games, the same span as their current losing streak. Long-range shots were equally as unfriendly to the visitors on the scoreboard, as IPFW hit 8-of-35 (22.9%) of their three-point attempts. Centenary made 47.7 percent (21-of-44) of their field goals from the field, and 4-of-13 (30.8%) from long range.
The ‘Dons forced 29 Centenary turnovers, their largest total this season; however, a 16-point differential from the free throw line (27-to-11), and being out-rebounded 49-28 proved costly for the Blue and White.
The Ladies, who picked up their first-ever victory over IPFW, were led by Karolina Zaloga, who scored 19 points, with Jackson and Farrell each scoring 15. Farrell pulled down 13 rebounds for the double-double, with Cierra Bush dishing out six assists.
The ‘Dons continue on their three-game road swing on Monday, January 12, as the team travels to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to take on the Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts University at the Mabee Center, with tip-off set for 8:00 PM EST.
