
Late Chicago State Rally Dooms `Dons

Chicago, IL – Trailing by just two with 6:14 to play in the game, the IPFW Mastodons gave up a 17-6 run to the host Chicago State Cougars over the remainder of the game, falling 69-56 in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.
Chelsey Jackson and Anne Boese scored 14 and 12 points, respectively, to lead the team, as Sarah Haluska added eight and Eva Ivanova seven. Four players, Courtney Reed, Nanyamka Moore, Jordan Zuppe, and Chelsey Jackson each pulled down five rebounds for the team lead, with Reed dishing out five of the team’s nine assists. Eva Ivanova added a game-high three blocks.
IPFW started strong in the game, leading by four at 8-4 following an Ivanova three-point basket, and led 9-8 before the host Cougars took their first lead of the game on a basket by Jasmin Dixon. The lead changed hands three more times in the next minute and a half, until the ‘Dons ran off to their largest lead of the half at 20-14 following the first of two Maggie O’Connell three-point baskets.
The ‘Dons then got caught on 20 points for the next five minutes, as they had their lead taken from them on a jumper by CSU’s Sarah Black. Three more lead changes followed before IPFW turned a two-point deficit into a four-point lead, that was cut to two at 30-28 at halftime.
IPFW pushed ahead to start the second half, taking a seven-point, 41-34 lead with 14:34 to play in the game. The Cougars answered by scoring eight straight points to take a one-point lead a minute and a half later, with IPFW able to recapture the lead just once, at 44-43.
The ‘Dons trailed 52-50 with 6:14 to play in the game before the hosts ended the frame on the aforementioned 17-6 run, cruising down the final stretches in the 13-point victory.
The ‘Dons hit just 19-of-53 shots from the field, a percentage of 35.8, while making 10-of-25 from long range. Chicago State was 27-of-62 (43.5%) from the field, and just 2-of-12 from long range. Chicago State out-rebounded IPFW 43-34, and led in the turnover column 19-15.
Elana Wroten was the game’s top scorer, putting in 19 points, including seven straight points during the key end-of-game run. Dixon scored 18, with Natalie Marlowe chipping in a dozen. Dixon added a dozen rebounds for the double-double, with Lauren Pierson also pulling down double-figure boards with 10.
The ‘Dons now play the remainder of their games in the Summit League, with the next ones coming this weekend, as IPFW plays host to IUPUI in a women’s/men’s double header at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center, with the women’s game starting at 1:30, before hosting Western Illinois on Monday, January 25, with tip-off slated for 7:00 PM.
