Brookings, SD- Thanks to Tara O’Toole’s second game-winning goal of the 2009 season, the IPFW women’s soccer team defeated South Dakota State in double-overtime on Sunday, 3-2 at Fishback Soccer Park in Brookings, South Dakota.
The win moves IPFW to 4-6-1 this season (3-1 in Summit League). The ‘Dons have won four out of their last five games, with three coming against conference opponents.
IPFW fired nine shots and six shots on goal in the victory, while the Jackrabbits made an eye-popping 35 shot attempts.
The contest remained scoreless until the Mastodons found the scoreboard in the 17th minute, as Lisa Underwood broke through the Jackrabbit defense and fired a shot into the heart of the goal. With the one goal advantage, the ‘Dons continued to put the pressure on the home team, and less than 12 minutes later, IPFW found the back of the net again. Underwood scored her seventh goal of the season and second in the half from nine yards out, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.
IPFW held the two goal lead for six minutes, until Jackrabbit Kalya Braffet fired a dagger into the Mastodon goal, making the score 2-1. Unfortunately for the Mastodons, this wasn’t the last time the home team would find the scoreboard.
Late in the second half, South Dakota State fought back with a goal from Danni Healy in the 82nd minute, evening the match at 2-2. With the score knotted at the end of regulation, the game went into overtime.
The Mastodon offense didn’t fire a shot in the first overtime session, while the Jackrabbits made five missed shot attempts. With the score still tied at 2-2, the contest moved into a second and final frame.
In the final overtime session, IPFW found the extra gear it needed from a familiar face. With under two minutes remaining in the contest, O’Toole dribbled down the left side of the field, and then fired a shot that found the back of the Jackrabbit net, giving IPFW the 3-2 victory. The successful goal was O’Toole’s fourth this season.
Mastodon goalkeeper Kristen McFadden had a busy day between the lines, making 13 saves on 35 shots.
The women’s soccer team will return home for its final two home games of the season, starting with Oral Roberts on October 16 at Hefner Stadium. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.
