Fort Wayne, IN- Two goals from Lisa Underwood couldn't seal the deal for the Mastodons against Oral Roberts on Friday night, as the Golden Eagles stormed back late in contest, winning in overtime 3-2 at Hefner Stadium.
The loss moves IPFW to 4-7-1 (3-2) on the season, while Oral Roberts improves to 5-7-0 (2-2).
Although a slow start to the game, with the first shot coming at the 4 minute mark from the Golden Eagles, the Mastodons pushed the tempo soon after, and found the scoreboard midway through the first period. Lisa Underwood gave IPFW a 1-0 lead after receiving the ball off a Ali Okihiro free kick that hit the cross bar, then headed the rock back into the Golden Eagle goal. Okihiro received the assist on the play.
Underwood wasn't done there, as she picked up goal number two on the night midway through the second half. At the 61st minute mark, the freshman received the ball at the halfway line, then drove the rest of the way, beating the Oral Roberts keeper on the far post. The goal was Underwood's ninth on the season.
While the insurance goal appeared to be enough for the home team, the visiting Golden Eagles had other ideas, as they scored two goals in the second half to even the score at 2-2, sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, the teams traded possessions for the majority of the session, until Oral Roberts ended all chances of a Mastodons win. With under two minutes left in overtime, Golden Eagle Whitney Booth fired a dagger from 10 yards out past Mastodon goalkeeper Kristen McFadden, ending the contest at 3-2.
On offense, IPFW was led by Underwood's two goals on four shots, two being on goal. McFadden made four saves on the evening, bringing her 2009 total to 76 saves.
The women's soccer team will look for conference win number five on Sunday at Hefner Stadium against Centenary. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
Sunday's contest is also Senior Day, and Mastodons will say farewell to senior Tammi Kerr, as she plays her final home game in the Royal Blue and White.
