Fort Wayne, IN- Two and counting.
Freshman Lisa Underwood scored two goals on eight shots, as the IPFW women's soccer team edged past the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 2-1 at Hefner Stadium in Fort Wayne. The win is the first conference victory for the Mastodons since 2007.
The second consecutive win by IPFW improves the team's record to 2-5-1 (1-0, Summit League) on the season. Southern Utah falls to 2-7-1 (0-1) with the loss.
The Mastodons pick up their first Summit League victory in two seasons, with the last coming back on October 12, 2007, against Centenary at Hefner Stadium. The win also is the program's first back-to-back victory, since the 2006 season.
Wasting no time, the Thunderbirds found the scoreboard at the 4' mark, as Makell Southworth fired a shot into the Mastodon goal off a rebound, giving the visitors a 1-0 early lead.
Two minutes later, Lisa Underwood matched the quick goal from Thunderbirds, with an unassisted goal of her own. After receiving the ball from the middle of the field, Underwood broke away from the Southern Utah defense, and fired a successful shot from 20 yards out past Southern Utah goalkeeper Breana Fitzgerald, knotting the score at 1-1.
The score remained 1-1 until the 60' mark, when Underwood, once again, found a seam in the Thunderbird backline, and fired another successful shot this time from 10 yards out into the far post. The goal was assisted by sophomore Brittany Climmons.
Thanks to solid efforts on both sides of the ball, the `Dons held on the remainder of the contest, winning on fan appreciation night, 2-1.
Underwood led the `Dons on offense with eight shots, six shots on goal, and two goals, bringing her 2009 goal total to five. Brittni Roy had three shots and one shot on goal, while Tara O'Toole, Tylar Allison, Danielle Bishop and Kari Gotschall all made shot attempts for the `Dons.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kristen McFadden had nine saves in the contest.
With two wins to their name, the women's soccer team will look for victory number three against UMKC on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. EST. The match will take place at Hefner Stadium.
