Fort Wayne, IN- The IPFW women's soccer team continued its fine play on Sunday afternoon against the UMKC Kangaroos, winning the shot-heavy match 2-0 at Hefner Stadium in Fort Wayne. The Mastodons have won three straight matches and are now 2-0 in conference play.
With the win, IPFW moves to 3-5-1 (2-0 Summit League) on the season, while UMKC falls to 0-11-1 (0-2 Summit League).
The last three game winning streak for the women's soccer team came back at the end of the 2005 season. The 'Dons look to make it four straight victories this Friday against North Dakota State.
The Mastodon offense got off to a slow start early in the contest, firing only two shots in the first 20 minutes of play. A few minutes later, however, the frontline turned up the pressure and regularly found itself in Kangaroo territory.
At the 35' mark, the home team found the scoreboard, when Arianne Mason received a pass inside the UMKC box from Brittni Roy, then fired a dagger into the far post, giving IPFW a 1-0 first half lead. The goal was Mason's first as a Mastodon.
The 'Dons would take the one goal lead into halftime.
The second half began with both teams trading possessions and moving the ball up and down the field. UMKC nearly tied the game at the 65' mark, when Kanagroo Megan Shipley fired a shot into the Mastodon goal, but the officials ruled UMKC offsides during the play. The overturned goal gave IPFW the momentum for the rest of the contest.
At the 85' mark, the Mastodons sealed the victory with its second goal on the afternoon, as Tara O'Toole fired a shot from 10 yards out, pushing the 'Dons ahead 2-0. Brittany Climmons picked up the assist on the goal.
The Mastodons played solid defense the remainder of the game, and as the final horn sounded, the Mastodons found themselves on the winning side of the scoreboard for the second time this weekend.
O'Toole led IPFW on offense with six shots, four shots on goal, and her second goal of the season. Mason had a goal on two shots and a shot on goal. Lisa Underwood fired four shots, while Roy, Melanie Esposito, and Kari Gotschall each fired two shots in the match. Kateri Till, Justine LeBlanc and Danielle Bishop each made a shot attempt, as well.
IPFW goalkeeper Kristen McFadden made four saves in the first shutout of the season.
The women's soccer team will look to continue its hot streak on Friday, October 9 with a road game against North Dakota State at 4:00 p.m. EST.
