Toledo, OH – Freshman guard Jake Barnett drove to the basket for a layup with :11 left in regulation to push Toledo past IPFW, 73-72 in a non-conference contest at Savage Arena on Thursday night in Ohio.
Barnett’s heroics overshadowed a great second-half performance by IPFW sophomore guard Jeremy Mixon. Mixon scored 11 second half points. His final two gave IPFW a 72-71 lead. He got behind the Rocket defense and drove to the basket to give the ‘Dons that one-point cushion with just :24 left.
It was the first lead for the Mastodons in the second half.
But on the ensuing trip up the floor, Barnett was able to rub off a screen at the top of the key and get a floater to go in the lane.
IPFW had one final chance, but junior guard Zach Plackemeier’s layup attempt was blocked by UT junior forward Mohammad Lo to seal the win.
IPFW led by as many as seven in the first half before watching the Rockets storm back to take a seven point half-time lead.
UT (3-7) shot well in the game, finishing the night at 56.0% from the field. They were led in scoring by Barnett and sophomore guard Jay Shunner who each had 16 points.
IPFW was led in scoring by junior forward Deilvez Yearby who also finished with 16 points. Yearby hauled down 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Junior guard Ben Botts chipped in 14, while Mixon added 13 and senior guard Nick Daniels 10.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 2-5 on the season. They will host the University of North Dakota on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Memorial Coliseum.
