Evansville, IN - A gutsy call by first year IPFW head coach Bobby Pierce and perfect execution by senior catcher Devin Taylor gave IPFW a 3-2 win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday afternoon on Day 2 of the Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic hosted by Evansville University.
IPFW trailed the Delta Devils 2-0 going into the bottom of the 6th inning at Braun Stadium.
With runners on first and second, first baseman Shaun VanDriessche singled through the left side scoring center fielder Garrett Segraves, who had reached on a walk.
Third baseman Mark Carden followed the VanDriessche base knock with an RBI single to left field that scored designated hitter Chris Gottschall tying the game at 2-all.
With runners on the corners and one out, Pierce signaled to Taylor to lay down a bunt. The IPFW senior backstop pushed a perfectly placed bunt up the first base line allowing VanDriessche to score and give the 'Dons a 3-2 lead.
Pierce then handed the ball over to his bullpen, and they closed it out.
Junior Matt Antos came on to relieve senior starter Stacy Herrold who only allowed four Delta Devil hits in 4-1/3 innings.
Antos tossed 2-2/3 innings of one hit ball, getting IPFW to the 9th inning with the one-run lead.
Pierce turned it over to Andrew Emge in the ninth, and the junior transfer from Vincennes University allowed just a bunt single in earning his first save of the season.
Antos got the win, his second of the season (2-2).
MVSU (5-8) starter Scott Reid took the loss (0-4). He gave up all three Mastodon runs. He struck out seven and walked three.
With the win, IPFW improves to 3-7. They will take on Purdue University at 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning in the final game of the tournament.
The 'Dons are scheduled to open the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Toledo at 2:00 p.m.
