Evansville, IN - Four IPFW pitchers combined on a four-hit masterpiece Sunday as the Mastodons shutout the Purdue Boilermakers, 1-0 on the final day of the Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic.
Senior starter Tyler Baatz tossed six innings, allowing just two Purdue base hits. Senior Brandon Knowling got in his work of the season, going 2/3 of an inning allowing a hit. Sophomore A.J. Risedorph tossed two innings of one-hit ball, and junior reliever Andrew Emge came on to get the final batter of the game.
The quartet of IPFW hurlers out-dueled an equally outstanding pitching performance by Purdue starter Matt Morgan.
Neither team was able to crack the scoring column until IPFW got the lone run of the ballgame in the top of the 9th inning.
Morgan got the first two outs of the inning but was touched up for a two-out single by shortstop Chris Gottschall. Morgan lost his control for just a moment and hit the next batter, IPFW first baseman Shaun VanDriessche. A passed ball moved both runners up 90-feet and into scoring position.
IPFW junior third baseman Mark Carden made Purdue pay by lacing a single to center that brought Gottschall home from third.
After getting the first two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Risedorph walked designated hitter Brandon Haveman. IPFW head coach Bobby Pierce went to his bullpen and brought on Emge. He got Purdue third baseman David Blount to ground out to VanDriessche at first to end the game.
The win was the first over Purdue in 15 previous tries for the Mastodon program.
Risedorph got the win, his first of the season (1-2). Emge earned his second save in two games.
Morgan (0-2) was the tough luck loser. He threw 8-2/3 innings, giving up the one run on six hits. He struck out six Mastodons while walking just one.
With the win, IPFW improves to 4-7, while Purdue fell to 5-8.
Weather and field conditions permitting, IPFW will play its first home game of the season on Wednesday after noon against the Toledo Rockets. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
