OXFORD, Ohio - Despite four Mastodons with double-digit digs, including a match-high 24 from Becky Barrett, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team fell to Miami 3-1 (26-24, 25-15, 18-25, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 5).
While Barrett paced the 'Dons defensively, Trinity Rye did so offensively, registering 16 kills. Rye was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts. Riley Rosneck added 13 kills and was one of those with double-digit digs with 14. Lili Smith had a double-double of 27 assists and 12 digs, while Miona Dimitric dug out 11 attacks.
Miami jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks in part to a strong hitting performance in the second set, hitting .355 in the frame. The Mastodons countered with an even better .406 clip in the third set, which they won. The distribution of attack was split fairly evenly for the 'Dons in the third set, with Mya Plemons, Avery Parris and Rye recording three kills each, Rosneck and Dimitric notching two, and Bella DiBuono converting one. The 'Dons went up 7-2, then put together a 4-0 run later on to go up 19-13.
The 'Dons led 12-8 in the fourth set, but the RedHawks swung the energy back onto their side of the floor with a 4-0 run to tie it up. They had another 4-0 run shortly after that put the Mastodons down three, from which they never tied it again.
Miami improved to 5-1, while the Mastodons fell to 3-4. The 'Dons will head west next weekend for Illinois State's tournament, the Linda Herman Volleyball Classic on Friday-Sunday (Sept. 11-13).
