Long Beach, CA -- The IPFW men's volleyball team (9-7) played No. 9 BYU (11-8) in its final match of the Active Ankle Classic hosted by Long Beach State University Saturday at the Walter Pyramid. Despite a competitive final frame by IPFW, BYU won 3-0 (30-23, 30-17, 30-20).
It was the second match against a ranked opponent in two days for IPFW as they played host team No. 7 Long Beach State Friday night. The 'Dons fell in that contest 3-0 (30-21, 30-24, 30-21).
Sophomore outside Darryl Shank scored 12.5 points while tallying 10 kills in the effort and had a team-high five block assists along with four digs.
The 'Dons jumped out to a 2-0 advantage thanks to consecutive BYU attack errors, and led at 5-3 after a kill from Phil Peterson and a Mastodon block. BYU quickly went on a 4-0 run to retake the lead at 7-5 and stretched the lead again by going on another 4-0 to lead 15-11. The biggest problem for IPFW in the first set was serving. The 'Dons served six errors in the first set to BYU's two and were out-killed 15-9. BYU took the first set 30-23.
The BYU Cougars logged set two's first point on a service ace from Russel Lavaja. IPFW's Peterson responded with a kill from setter Dan Mader and then recorded his own service ace to take a brief lead at 2-1. BYU then maintained the serve and earned the next five straight poitns to lead 6-2. The 'Dons subbed in junior setter Corey Stewart, but the Cougars offense was just to much for IPFW. BYU hit 15 kills in the second set on 27 attempts for a .444 attack percentage. In comparison IPFW hit 11 kills on 36 attempts. BYU's block picked up in the second set accumulating five to IPFW's one. The Cougars ran away in the second 30-17.
The third set began with a 6-0 BYU run before IPFW's Ben Duckworth got the 'Dons on the board with a kill from Mader. IPFW attempted to come right back with a 4-0 run which included a kill from Oliver Kook and three straight blocks, (two block assists from Kook and Shank and a solo block from Mader). IPFW trailed by four at 12-8 before Nathaniel Berg connected on a kill from Mader to cut the lead to 12-9. Two Cougar service errors and an ace from Duckworth cut the lead to two at 14-12. A kill from Duckworth again cut the lead to two at 15-13. Shortly thereafter however, the Cougars went on a tear garnering seven of the next nine points to take a 22-15 lead. BYU led by as many as 10 in the third frame at 27-17, and closed the match out at 30-20. Shank recorded three of his team high five blocks in the third frame but BYU banged 18 kills to IPFW's eight.
BYU hit .381 as a team on the night and was led by outside Kevin Sagers with 11 kills. Eight players recorded at least three kills for the Cougars. Setter Joe Kauliakamoa led No. 9 BYU with 19 assists.
Mader collected 17 assists, leading IPFW, while Duckworth continued to serve aggressively, logging a match-high three service aces.
IPFW next travels west to Pennsylvania for the Quaker State trip. The 'Dons will visit No. 4 Penn State on Friday, March 20 before concluding the weekend at Saint Francis on March 21. Both matches to start at 7:00 PM ET.
