Fort Wayne, IN - In absolutely brutal weather, IPFW blew an eight run lead, only to win it in their final at-bat over LeMoyne College, 12-11 on Sunday afternoon at Mastodons Field.
The Mastodons exploded out to an 8-1 lead by the end of the 3rd inning.
In the top of the fifth, LeMoyne cut that lead to 8-3 on back-to-back-to-back doubles by second baseman Brett Botsford, first baseman Chris Haynes, and shortstop Matt Nandin.
The 'Dons would add three more in the bottom of the inning on a bases clearing double by senior shortstop Chris Gottschall.
Just when it looked like the Mastodons would cruise to an easy win in weather that was part rain, part sleet, and part snow, with wind chills in the mid-20's, LeMoyne came roaring back.
The Dolphins (6-14) got one in the sixth, a three-run homer from left fielder Chris Edmondson in the eighth, and four in the ninth to tie it at 11.
Two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth had the game headed for extra innings, but LeMoyne reliever Brandon Otto began to lose his control. Otto walked right fielder Joel Washko and third baseman Jason Doerffler to bring up Gottschall.
Gottschall drove an Otto offering to the wall in right center field scoring Washko and sending the 'Dons home with their first win in their last seven games.
IPFW used six pitchers in the game. Junior reliever Josh Shatto came on in the top of the 9th inning, getting IPFW out of a jam to pick up his second win of the season (2-0). He tossed just two-thirds of an inning, striking out one and walking one.
Otto took the loss (0-3). He went 1.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits. He struck out four and walked two.
Gottschall finished the afternoon going 3-6 with four RBI and a pair of doubles.
With the win, IPFW improves to 6-14.
The Mastodons return to action on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Purdue at Mastodons Field. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
