Mastodons Take Ninth at Detroit Invitational

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Fresh off the program's first ever tournament win, the IPFW men's golf team competed in the Detroit Invitational at the Golden Fox Golf Club in Plymouth, Michigan. While the Mastodons sat comfortably after 36 holes, the 'Dons couldn't gain ground in round three, ending the event in ninth place with a 918.
Despite a 302 in round one, the Mastodons struggled in round two with a 312, dropping them three spots on the leaderboard heading into round three. The 'Dons regained momentum in the final 18 holes with four-sub 80 rounds to finish with a 918, six strokes back of conference foe Oakland.
Loyola-Chicago won the team title with a 54-hole total of 894, followed by Dayton (901) Butler (903) and tournament-host Detroit (903).
Sophomore Ryan Olbin led IPFW with a pair of 74s and an 81, placing him tied 25th with a 229. This is the second consecutive tournament Olbin has finished in the top-25, while leading the team with a 75.22 scoring average this spring.
Senior Hartley Mcleod put together rounds of 74-80-76 to finish in 30th place with a 230. The three rounds move McLeod's spring scoring average 76.11.
Senior Jon Balyeat was one of two 'Dons to fire three rounds in the 70s, shooting 79-76-76, good enough for 33rd place. Patrick Kelley finished a stroke and a placement behind Balyeat with a 232 (75-76-81), and Johnny McMillen carded a 54-hole total of 245 (83-85-77).
For the final time this spring, head coach Billy King sent out two golfers to compete in the individual competition. Despite not competing in the team event, Tyler Haire had the best weekend for IPFW by placing eighth and carding three rounds of 223 (74-75-74). Jacob Bailey finished tied for 55th after shooting a 54-hole of 240 (80-77-83).
The Mastodons will now prepare for the Summit League conference tournament on April 27-28 in Kansas City, Missouri. Round one tee times have yet to be announced.
