KANSAS CITY, Mo. - After Monday's first round was shorten due to darkness, the IPFW men's golf team finished the final two rounds of play and their season on Tuesday in the Summit League Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. The Mastodons finished in tenth place with a 916 team total.
IPFW ended the 54-hole stroke play event eight strokes behind Centenary (908) and 12 swings behind North Dakota State (904). Oral Roberts captured the tournament title in record fashion, firing a three-round total of 860 (-4). This is the Golden Eagles sixth tournament win in school history, and first since 2003. UMKC finished runner- up for the second time in as many years with an 869, and South Dakota State and Western Illinois tied for third place with an 870 total.
While the `Dons looked to move up the leaderboard on day two, the rest of the field had to same intention, as all but two schools made round three their best round of the tournament. IPFW put together rounds of 303-309-304, which is a 16 stroke improvement from last year's ninth place squad, who fired a 932.
IPFW senior Patrick Kelley played steady golf the past two days with rounds of 74-75-74. He finished the event in 20th place, his second top-20 finish this season.
Freshman Johnny McMillen put on a good performance in his first conference tournament with a three-round total of 227, good enough for a 27th place finish. McMillen ends the season with a 76.0 spring average.
The three remaining finishers for IPFW were Tyler Haire (77-79-77) with a 233 (77-79-77) and in 40th place; Ryan Olbin with a 234 (79-78-77) and 43th place finish; and senior Jon Balyeat with 235 (+19) and a 47th place finish.
After it's all said and done, this IPFW men's golf team will look back and remember the 2009 spring as a season of change and historic accomplishments. Most notably, the team won the school's first ever tournament back on April 6 at the Norm Bullock Collegiate in Celina, Ohio.
