
Awards Banquet Highlights Student-Athlete Achievements

Fort Wayne, IN – IPFW seniors Chris Gottschall of the baseball team and Crystina Martinez of the cross country and track & field squads were recently named the 2009 Male and Female IPFW Athletes of the Year at the Mastodons’ year-end awards banquet held at the Marriot Marquis Ballroom.
Gottschall ended the 2009 season ranked highly in the conference in numerous offensive categories, including hits, doubles, RBI’s, total bases and slugging percentage. Additionally, he ends the year ranked 27th in Division I in doubles with 21, and 38th in doubles per game (0.41). He led the team with a .351 batting average, 48 RBI’s, 115 total bases, .569 slugging percentage, 38 runs scored, and was tied for the team lead with seven home runs.
Martinez was named the 2008 Summit League Cross Country Runner of the Year, and earned Summit League Athlete of the Week honors five times. She took first at the 2008 Summit League championships, and earned All-Region honors by placing 12th at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet. She ran in nine races during the indoor season, setting school records six times, and was the indoor conference champion in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs, setting a new conference record in the latter.
Jessica Miller and David Carson were named the 2009 Male and Female Senior Athletes of the Year.
Matt Pliske of the Men’s Volleyball Team was given the 2009 Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Award, and Christine Kuznar was given the 2009 SALT Service to Students Award.
The 2009 Female Freshman of the Year was given to Courtney Cronin of the Softball team, and the 2009 Male Freshman of the Year is Max Touloute of the Men’s Soccer Team.
Patrick Kelley of the Men’s Golf Team, based on his perfect 4.0 grade point average, was given the Senior Academic Excellence Award.
Six IPFW student-athletes were recognized as David R. Skelton Award nominees: Kelley; A.J. Risedorph of the Baseball Team; Pliske; Ali Okihiro of the Women’s Soccer Team; and Beth Hoekstra of the Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field Teams, with Beatrice Pedraza of the Softball Team winning the honor.
Gerald Isch was named the 2009 Tony Laux Volunteer of the Year Award, and the Women’s Soccer Team won the 2009 Mastodon Cup.
