Brookings, SD - South Dakota state scored early then beat the raindrops, topping IPFW 7-0 in a rain-shortened series opener at Erv Heuther Field on Friday afternoon.
Jackrabbits' third baseman Jesse Sawyer gave SDSU all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first on a three-run shot to center field. It was Sawyer's 16th homer of the season. The Jacks tacked on one more to take a 4-0 lead.
As the Jackrabbits added three more, IPFW couldn't muster much of an offensive threat against South Dakota State pitching. The 'Dons managed six hits but couldn't push a run across.
In the bottom of the 5th inning the rains came, and after an hour-long delay, the game was called.
Sam Pieczynski got the win (5-3). He went 3.0 innings before giving way to reliever Mike Robinson. Piexcynski gave up three hits and struck out three 'Dons.
IPFW starter Tyler Baatz took the loss (0-4). He gave up four runs on six hits in 2.0 innings of work.
With the loss, the Mastodons fall to 10-35 and 3-18 SL, while the Jackrabbits improved to 19-26 and 12-8 in league play.
IPFW and South Dakota State will face off in a doubleheader Saturday, weather permitting.
