Fort Wayne, IN- In the first exhibition match of the 2009 season, the IPFW women's soccer team fell short to Murray State 3-2, at Hefner Stadium in Fort Wayne. The Mastodons will take on Eastern Illinois in a second and final exhibition match on August 17.
For this match, the two teams decided to play three, 30 minute periods, instead of the costumed two, 45 minute periods. This decision gave both coaching staffs the opportunity to make more substitutions and try different lineups.
In the exhibition defeat, IPFW saw many new faces take field for the first time in their collegiate careers.
One of those new faces was freshman Arianne Mason, who made her IPFW debut one to remember by putting the Mastodons up 1-0, early in the first period. The Mastodon lead lasted until the 28th minute mark, when Jenna Fioranelli of Murray State made the score 1-1, after receiving a middle pass from Nicole Evans. The score remained 1-1 after the first period.
Five minutes into the second period, IPFW hit the scoreboard again, when sophomore Brittni Roy put the `Dons up 2-1, after receiving a jump ball header from a pack of 'Dons and Racers in middle of the field. Murray State fired back with a second goal in the 52nd minute, after Rachel Wright drove the left side of the field, and placed a shot over a charging Kristen McFadden, to make the score even again 2-2. The score remained tied heading into the third and final period.
The two teams battled it out early on in the last session, until Murray State scored their third and final goal in the 77th minute. The goal came from Fioranelli, her second on the night, after she put in a header past new IPFW freshman goalie Brittany Marx, to take the lead and the game, 3-2.
In the match, the `Dons put together an impressive stat sheet, with many different players taking shots from all over the field. IPFW totaled 14 shots and made six shots on goals on Saturday.
Roy and Tara O'Toole made three shots each, Mason and Kateri Till both fired two shots, and Tylar Allison, Brittany Climmons, Danielle Bishop and Carly Mirwaldt fired one shot a piece.
In goal for IPFW, McFadden started the game and played the first two periods, stopping four shots along the way. Marx played the final period and made three diving saves.
