Chippewas Offense Too Much For Mastodons

Fort Wayne, IN- The IPFW women’s soccer team opened the 2009 season Saturday evening against the Central Michigan Chippewas in front of a large crowd at the Hefner Soccer Complex. Unfortunately for the Mastodons, the Chippewa offense came out firing early, leading to a Central Michigan win over IPFW, 4-0.
IPFW had a tough time most of the evening moving the ball onto Central Michigan territory. Meanwhile, the Chippewas controlled the game’s tempo early in the match, outshooting the Mastodons 5-1 in the first half, and finished the game with a 15-1 shot margin.
The first half began with back and forth possession changes, until IPFW sophomore Brittany Climmons took the game’s first shot, nearly giving the ‘Dons the lead at the 13th minute mark, but she just missed just high from 18 yards over the Central Michigan goal. It wasn’t until the 17th minute, when Chippewa Leisal Toth put the visitors up 1-0, with a shot straight through the IPFW defense. Central Michigan had other first half scoring opportunities off five corner kicks, but all attempts for a goal were unsuccessful. As the horn sounded for the conclusion of the first half, Central Michigan led IPFW, 1-0.
In the second half, the Chippewas reloaded its offensive arsenal and put the pressure on the IPFW defense for the rest of the game. Central Michigan managed 12 shots in the second half, leading to three more goals. The trio of goals came from Chelso Abbott (52nd minute), Laura Twidle (73rd minute) and Bailey Brandon (87th minute). The Mastodons fired one shot on goal in the second frame, and it came from freshman Arianne Mason in the 76th minute, which resulted in a save by Chippewas goalkeeper Shay Mannino.
Despite the loss, IPFW sophomore goalkeeper Kristen McFadden made impressive saves all evening, saving four shots in the match.
The Mastodons will look to regroup for its next game on August 28 as they travel Akron, Ohio, to take on the Akron Zips at 7:00 p.m. EST.
