Youngstown, OH- Despite taking an early 1-0 lead, the IPFW women's soccer team lost 2-1 in overtime to Youngstown State on Sunday. The lone Mastodons goal came from Lisa Underwood, her first in an IPFW uniform.
The `Dons came out aggressive from the game's opening minute, not allowing Youngstown State any opportunity to move the ball effectively on offense. Underwood took the first shot of the contest in the 5th minute, missing just wide of the Penguin goal. Two minutes later, the freshman broke away from the Penguin defense and fired another shot, this time finding the back of the net, putting the `Dons up early 1-0. Soon after, Melanie Esposito picked up a yellow card, and Youngstown State gained momentum off the Mastodon foul.
In the 30th minute, Penguin Kara Cooper found a seam in the IPFW defense, and put a shot into the left side of net, evening the score at 1-1. Youngstown State had two chances off corner kicks to take the lead before halftime, but failed to convert on both attempts. The score remained even at the break.
The second period began with Youngstown State taking the half's first five shots, while IPFW continued the aggressive play by committing three fouls.
Late in the half, the `Dons had four chances to take the outright lead, as Danielle Bishop made two shot attempts--one missing off the post-- and Tara O'Toole and Melanie Esposito each fired a shot, both missing the net. The Penguins had their fair share of chances to take the lead, too, as Geneva Strelka, Cooper, and Cory Stark all missed shots wide with less than 10 minutes left in the game.
The teams traded possessions until the second half came to an end, with the scored still even at 1-1. It was off to overtime.
IPFW had an opportunity early in the extra frame to bring home the victory, as Arianne Mason fired a shot that missed high above the Penguin goal. In the 99th minute, the Penguins ended all chances for a Mastodon win, as Cooper scored the game winning goal, her second goal on the afternoon, as the overtime horn sounded.
The loss moves IPFW to 0-1-1 on the season, while Youngstown State improves to 2-1-1.
The Mastodons finished the contest with a full statsheet, accumulating 13 shots, seven shots on goal and 16 fouls. Underwood led the `Dons with three shots, two shots on goal and a score. Esposito, Bishop and Brittni Roy fired two attempts apiece, while Mason, Tylar Allison and Justine LeBlanc each made one shot attempt.
IPFW goalkeeper Kristen McFadden had a busy afternoon, making seven saves against a late surging and frisky Penguin offense. The sophomore now has 10 saves on the season.
Next up for the Mastodons is a home match at Hefner Stadium on September 4 against Horizen League member Wright State. Game time is set for 7:00 pm ET.
