Aggressive Game From Mastodons Ends at 1-1

Fort Wayne, Ind.- In a physical match that featured 29 fouls and five yellow cards, the IPFW women's soccer team came from beyond late in the second half to force overtime, leading to a 1-1 final score against the Wright State Raiders, Friday evening at Hefner Stadium.
The Mastodons are now 0-2-1 on the season, while the Raiders move to 0-3-1.
In the aggressive and two overtime contest, IPFW fired a total of 10 shots and five shots on goal, adding 14 fouls along the way. Wright State mustard 25 shots and 10 shots on goal, and like the 'Dons, posted a double-digit foul total of 15. Five yellow cards were passed out, four occurring in the second half alone.
The Raiders, who defeated the Mastodons 3-0 last season in Dayton, came out firing early, totaling 11 shots in the first half. One of those 11 shots fell in the 30th minute, when Morgan Butler redirected a shot off a cross pass into the goal, to put the Raiders ahead early 1-0. The Mastodons attempted three shots in the half, but all attempts were unsuccessful. Heading into halftime, Wright State led IPFW, 1-0.
The second half is when both teams took off the gloves, pounding shots from all over the field. Although the Raiders outshot the 'Dons 10-7 in the second frame, only IPFW found the scoreboard in the half.
Freshman Lisa Underwood scored her second goal of the season and kept the Mastodons alive in the 74th minute, after receiving the ball from a trailing Rhea Proctor and breaking away from the Raider defense, to knot the score at 1-1. As the two teams traded possessions and accumulated a few yellow cards, the horn sounded for the end of regulation, with the scored tied at 1-1.
In the extra frames, IPFW was unable to attempt a shot, while the Raiders fired four unsuccessful shots. The IPFW defense held off two late corner kicks by Wright State, both possessions ending in goal kicks. As the final horn sounded around at 9:55 p.m., the scoreboard read 1-1.
Holding off a shot happy Raider offense, Kristen McFadden made nine saves on the evening, bringing her 2009 season total to 19 saves. Underwood made 3 shot attempts on the night, one leading to a Mastodon goal. Also making shots for IPFW were Tara O'Toole (2), Brittni Roy (2), Justine LeBlanc (1), Melanie Esposito (1), and Arianne Mason (1).
Next up for the women's soccer team is an away match this Sunday at 1:00 p.m against Mid American Conference opponent Bowling Green.
