Bowling Green, OH- So close.
Despite firing four more shots on goal, the IPFW women's soccer team fell short of win number one against Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon, 1-0.
With the defeat, IPFW moves to 0-3-1 on the young season, while Bowling Green improves to 3-2-0.
The Falcons got off to a fast start, as they quickly moved the ball into IPFW territory in the game' s opening two minutes. The home team nearly took the early lead off a corner kick by Megan Amann, but the `Don defense held tight, and cleared the ball away, ending the Falcons first offensive push.
Four minutes later, IPFW junior Melanie Esposito fired IPFW's first shot of day, resulting in a save by Falcon goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault. Moments later, Brittni Roy nearly gave the visiting `Dons another chance at the lead, but her shot attempt was blocked by the Falcon defense. IPFW made five more shot attempts in the first half, coming up empty on each attempt. Bowling Green had two chances in the half's final minutes to take the lead off corner kicks, but the IPFW defense once again dug in, and stopped the Falcons offensive attack. At halftime, the score remained tied 0-0.
The second half began as it did 43 minutes earlier, as Bowling Green's offense came out firing. Amann attempted another corner goal for the Falcons three minutes into the half, resulting in change of possession. Her next attempt towards the IPFW goal, however, set the tone for the remainder of the contest.
At the 59th minute, after receiving a double pass from Katelyn Turner and Meagen Morgan, Amann put a dagger into the `Dons net, giving Bowling Green a 1-0 lead. While the Falcons offense continued to push for insurance goals, IPFW was unable to find the offensive attack it showed in the game's opening half, firing only two more shots the rest of the way. Unfortunately, these shots failed to find the net, resulting in a Bowling Green 1-0 victory.
In the loss, Roy led the Mastodons offense with a total of five shots, three of which were on goal. Esposito had one shot on goal, while Kari Gotschall made four shot attempts. IPFW goalkeeper Kristen McFadden made one save on the afternoon.
IPFW head coach Margaret Saurin had this to say following today's contest.
"We have been playing exceptionally well in the last four games. Today's game I felt we deserved more than we got. We dominated in shots on goal and we were evenly matched in shots. At times, we dominated during play and created some great chances to put ourselves in the lead. We had a breakaway attempt by Brittni Roy saved by the Bowling Green keeper. Their defense also came up big in their penalty area blocking shots and making big tackles. We held them to limited shots, which I was very pleased with, but we let in a goal from a fast counter attack. We fought hard to get that goal back, but couldn't find the back of the net for all of our efforts."
The women's team will have a week off to prepare for a home match against Detroit next Sunday at 6:00 p.m. The game will take place at Hefner Stadium.
