Akron, OH- This evening's non-conference soccer match between the IPFW women's soccer team and Akron was cancelled due to rain and lightning, according to Akron assistant media relations director Gregg Bach. The game was cancelled with 10 minutes left in the first half with the Zips leading the Mastodons 1-0.
Following the game's cancellation, IPFW assistant coach Joe DeMay said the contest between the two teams will not be made up this season.
In the end, Mother Nature won tonight's match, but the `Dons received fine play from two of its freshmen, Lisa Underwood and Danielle Bishop. Underwood fired two shots on goal, both of which were saved by Akron goalkeeper Michelle Smith. Bishop aired off a shot in the 6th minute, missing just high above Smith and the Zip's goal.
Akron did pick up a goal in the 20th minute from Britti Back, who scored off a breakaway shot from the right side of the field into an open IPFW net. Back fired another shot on goal with just over a minute into the contest, but IPFW goalkeeper Kristen McFadden made the save, her only other save attempt on the evening.
The Mastodons will hope for better luck with the weather next time around as they take on Youngstown State this Sunday at 1:00 pm ET.
