Ft. Wayne, IN – Reading through the statistical categories, Friday night’s match between the Mastodons and Red Flash of Saint Francis (Pa.) absolutely needed extra time. Ninety minutes of balanced soccer was not enough to settle the score between the two evenly matched sides.
That all changed in the game’s 95th minute as Saint Francis forward Kingsley McLeod capitalized on an IPFW defensive mistake, firing the shot past the ‘Don defense and giving his side a hard fought 2-1 victory.
The Red Flash put the first and last scores of the game on the board. In just the 11th minute of action, Saint Francis’ Daniel Moir lobbed a deep shot from outside the box over the head of a charging Donovan Dowling for the first tally of the match and an early 1-0 lead.
Thirty minutes later in the half, Max Touloute answered the deficit. Touloute swiped an errant pass and, on-the-run, fired a laser that found the upper-90 near side. The unassisted score is Touloute’s second of the season.
The second half read like the scorebook. With the game shot totals at 17-15 in favor of the Red Flash, corner kicks at 3-3 and saves at 6-5 Red Flash, neither side could break through to break the tie. The horn sounded to end regulation, still knotted at 1-1.
But four minutes into the bonus period, McLeod’s aforementioned ‘golden goal’ closed out the evening for the ‘Dons with a 2-1 final on the board.
Liridon Qafleshi, Raphael Martinez and Colin Helmrich each took three shots on the night to lead the Mastodon offense. Donovan Dowling totaled six saves.
The ‘Dons fall to 3-4 on the season and will return to action Sunday as travel to Bowling Green for a 2 p.m. kickoff with the Falcons. Coach Harper and his squad will return to home action next Friday as they open the Summit League slate with a 7 p.m. match-up against the Centenary Gents.
