HAMMOND, Ind. - The Mastodon women's golf squad opened the Fall half of the 2009-2010 season Monday, as they closed the first day of competition in 9th place at Chicago State's PTSIR Golf Performance Classic.
Sophomore Tosha Embry carded a first-day 92 (45-47) to lead the 'Dons at the Lost Marsh Golf Course. Her score ties her previous 18-hole best, set at the North-South Collegiate in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. last spring.
Three freshmen rounded out the young IPFW lineup. Alyssa Turney, who currently sits in 53rd place, fired a 96 (49-47) while teammate Breanna Hatter posted a 99 (48-51). Jillian Joyce rounded out the IPFW scoring as she shot a first-round 102 in her collegiate debut.
Butler sits atop the team leaderboard after day one, as Bulldog Molly Fields fired a one-over 73 to take the individual lead on the 5,910 yard course. The Bulldogs used three top-ten finishes to head into day two with the lead.
The 'Dons will tee-off for the final day of the tournament tomorrow morning (Sept. 22) in a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start at Lost Marsh.
