Edwardsville, IL- The IPFW women's soccer team has gone through a few tough seasons the last few years, but the program's patience and efforts were rewarded on Sunday afternoon. Thanks to second half goals from sophomores Brittni Roy and Tara O'Toole, the Mastodons found themselves on the winning side of the scoreboard for the first time since 2007, as IPFW defeats SIU-Edwardsville, 2-1 at Korte Stadium.
As mentioned, the last victory for the women's soccer team was back in 2007, when the Mastodons defeated Centenary College 1-0 at Hefner Stadium.
With Sunday's win, this year's squad improves to 1-5-1 on the season, while the Cougars remain winless at 0-6.
As play began, SIU-Edwardsville controlled the game's opening tip, and quickly moved the ball into IPFW territory. The Cougars fired the first six shots of the contest, with the sixth attempt finding the back of the Mastodon net, giving the home team a 1-0 early lead. Cougar Correen Roark scored from eight yards out after receiving a swift pass from teammate Jenny Humphrey.
IPFW managed two missed shots in the opening period, both coming from freshman Lisa Underwood, but as the first half ended, the score remained 1-0 in favor of the home team.
The second half began with a pair of shots from both teams, with each attempt missing the wide of the goal. In the 53rd minute, the Mastodons found the scoreboard after sophomore Brittni Roy received a pass from Underwood, and fired a shot from eight yards out, trying the game at 1-1. The successful goal from Roy is her second in an IPFW uniform.
With the score knotted at 1-1, the Mastodons had the momentum, as they pushed towards victory with six more shots in the second half. On the fourth attempt, which came from Tara O'Toole, the sophomore gave IPFW the outright lead, with a chip shot into the Cougar goal at the 77 minute mark.
Late offensive pushes by the Cougar offense weren't enough, as Mastodon goalkeeper Kristen McFadden and the IPFW defense held its ground, as time expired with the scoreboard reading: IPFW 2, SIU-Edwardsville 1.
In the win, the IPFW offense was led by the sophomore duo of Roy and O'Toole, as each scored their first goal of the season on two shot attempts a piece. Underwood fired two shots, while Brittany Climmons and Danielle Bishop each managed a shot apiece.
McFadden ended the game with a career-high 13 saves, bringing her 2009 season total to 42 blocks.
Next up for the women's soccer team is the first conference match of the 2009 season on October 2 at 7:00 p.m. EST against Southern Utah. The game will be held at Hefner Stadium.
