Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW offense was clicking on all cylinders Friday night. Led by reserve forward Casey Bowman's goal and assist, the Mastodons downed the Western Michigan Broncos, 2-0.
Bowman wasted no time in making the impact his team needed. Twenty-nine minutes into the match, and just 38 seconds after the junior checked into the game, he chipped teammate Cory Keitz's pass over the hands of an outstretched Bronco goalie for the `Dons' first score of the game and the young season.
Sophomore forward Max Touloute, a member of the Summit League All-Newcomer team a season ago, tacked on the second IPFW score of the evening in the game's 67th minute. He showed off his fancy footwork, capitalizing on a give-and-go, two-on-one opportunity from Bowman, the game's offensive catalyst.
But the Mastodon performance was far from a one-man show. Nineteen players saw action in the match and a sound defensive backfield logged the first shutout of the 2009 campaign as well.
Junior Donovan Dowling posted four saves and the first clean sheet of his young Mastodon career. Dowling, a junior college transfer, is no stranger to the shutout. He posted a school-record 23 of them during his time at Barton, while amassing a 38-4-2 record in the net.
IPFW's high-pressure offense controlled the tempo and possession of the ball for most of the game, out-shooting the Broncos 13-9.
The `Dons are now 1-1-0 in the early season and will look to keep the ball rolling on Sunday as they host the Detroit Titans in a 2 p.m. match-up at Hefner Stadium.
