Elmhurst, IL - The IPFW Mastodon women's basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the 2010-11 Summit League preseason poll, the highest preseason pick for the Mastodons in the school's four years in the league. Also receiving accolades for IPFW were juniors Stephanie Rosado, who was selected to the preseason First Team, and Anne Boese, who was named to the Second Team.
"I'm very happy at the progress that our program has made over the past four years," said IPFW head coach Chris Paul. "To have Stephanie on the First Team, and Anne on the Second is a compliment to both our team and to them. It is nice to be viewed as one of the top teams in our conference by our peers."
The Mastodons have improved their preseason standings in each of the four seasons they have been in the Summit League. In 2007-08, the school's first season in the league, the team was picked eighth, and a year later the squad was picked seventh. Last season the coaches and media picked the team fifth, and improving that standing again this year with the fourth place prediction.
IPFW returns its top five scorers from last season, including Rosado who averaged 13.8 points, Boese, who averaged 12.5, senior guard Chelsey Jackson (11.4), senior guard Jordan Zuppe (9.3) and sophomore forward Sydney Weinert (6.8). Also back are the team's top four rebounders, led by Rosado (6.6), Weinert (5.1) senior forward Sarah Haluska (3.8), and Jackson (3.1), and the top two leaders in assists in Zuppe (101), and Jackson (97).
Oral Roberts, the defending regular season champion, was picked by the coaches, media, and SID's to defend its regular season title with 438 points and 26 first place votes. South Dakota State, the defending Summit League Tournament champion, was picked second with 393 points and the remaining four first-place votes. Oakland finished just ahead of IPFW with 336 points, with the Mastodons earning 285 voting points.
North Dakota State and UMKC finished just behind IPFW with 274 and 253 points, respectively, with Southern Utah and Western Illinois tying for seventh place with 162 points. IUPUI (99), and Centenary (48) rounded out the ten teams in the league.
Oral Roberts' Kevi Luper was named the Preseason Player of the Year, and was joined on the First Team by Rosado, Jaci Bigham of Oral Roberts, Katie Birkel of North Dakota State, Kristin Rotert of South Dakota State, and Bethany Watterworth of Oakland.
The second team was comprised of Boese, Brittany Carnago of Oakland, Kerah Nelson of IUPUI, Challis Pascucci of Southern Utah, and Jordan Pyle of Oral Roberts.
Rosado is the third Mastodon to earn All-League Preseason First Team honors, joined by Johnna Lewis-Carlisle in 2007-08, and Jackson in 2009-10. It was the first time, however, that the team has put two players on the two-squad list, as Boese joins Zuppe (2008-09) as 'Dons who have earned Second Team Preseason honors.
The Mastodons open the 2010-11 season when the squad travels north to East Lansing, Michigan, to take on the Spartans of Michigan State University, a squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
