Slow Start Dooms 'Dons in Loss to Louisville

Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW fell behind by 16 points over the first four and a half minutes of the contest, and were never able to recover, falling 100-79 to the Cardinals of Louisville on Monday evening at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
Anne Boese scored a season-high 19 points, making 5-of-12 shots from long range, while pulling down seven rebounds, a season-high and one off of her career-best. Kayla Drake scored an IPFW-career-high with 18 points while adding four steals and four rebounds, with Chelsey Jackson scoring 15 points and dishing out a team-best five assists.
Freshman Erin Murphy scored a career-high 12 points, as did Stephanie Rosado, Murphy making 4-of-7 shots from the field, and Rosado 5-of-7. IPFW made 12-of-28 three-point shots in the game, including 9-of-15 (.600 percent) in the second half.
IPFW (3-2) missed its first six shots of the game, and went 1-for-10 over the first nine minutes of the game, while Louisville made 11 of its first 17 shots over the same span (.647 percent), giving the visitors the momentum for a 20-point, 26-6 lead.
The Mastodons got as close as 17 at 42-25 on a Boese three-point basket with 13 seconds left in the first half, sending IPFW into the locker room trailing by that same margin.
The Cardinals made its first four shots of the second half, scoring the first seven points and increasing the margin to 24 points before IPFW chipped away at the deficit, and closed to within 15 on a Murphy lay-in with 16:15 remaining in the half.
The 15 points would be as close as the Mastodons would come the rest of the way, despite the Mastodons catching fire in the second half from long range, making 9-of-13 three-point baskets from the 17:09 mark of the half until the final buzzer.
Louisville put six players in double figures, led by 22 from Sheronne Vails, and 15 from Shoni Schimmel, who added a game-high seven assists.
IPFW made 27-of-60 shots from the field in the game, a percentage of .450, while converting on 12-of-28 from long range (.429 percent). Louisville was nearly unstoppable from the field, making 40-of-59 total shots (.678 percent), and 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) from long range. The one shooting aspect that IPFW out-shot Louisville on was free throws, where IPFW hit 13-of-16 (.813 percent) compared to Louisville's 13-of-23 (.565 percent).
The Mastodons return to action in the third of six consecutive games at home, when the squad hosts Southern Utah in the Summit League opener for both squads. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM on December 4 at the Memorial Coliseum.
