Cedar City, UT- IPFW senior guard Nick Daniels had a career-high 24 points, including eight in overtime as IPFW survived a buzzer-beater in regulation to top Southern Utah, 72-65 on Saturday night at the Centrum Arena in Cedar City, Utah.
IPFW never trailed in the game, but couldn’t close it out in regulation as SUU sophomore forward Jake Nielson tied the game at 61 with a desperation triple at the buzzer.
The Mastodons took immediate control of the overtime session as Daniels knocked down his fifth 3-pointer of the game to give the ‘Dons a 64-61 lead.
Daniels added another jumper and IPFW got a huge boost as junior guard Zach Plackemeier dialed long distance making it 69-63 with 2:30 left in the extra session.
From there, Daniels added three more free-throws to seal the victory.
Daniels and Plackemeier (11) were joined in double digits by junior forward Ben Botts with 10. Botts played just 13 minutes due to a high fever. His status was questionable at the start of the game.
IPFW also got great contributions from sophomore forward Trey McCorkle who had nine points and six rebounds and junior forward Antwone Snead who posted seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Southern Utah (6-19, 2-12 SL) was led in scoring by Nielson with 20. Matt Hodgson and Davis Baker had 15 and 12 points, respectively.
The win snaps a three-game losing skid for the ‘Dons and improves their overall record to 12-13 and 7-8 overall in the league. The Mastodons will return to action on Thursday night, hosting North Dakota State at the Coliseum at 7:00 p.m. IPFW will play its next three at home before going to Oakland to finish out the 2009-10 regular season.
