Fort Wayne, IN - Sophomore forward Trey McCorkle scored a career-high 21 points and senior forward Deilvez Yearby scored 12 straight points in the second half as IPFW topped North Dakota State, 71-67 on Thursday night at the Memorial Coliseum.
The win, IPFW's second straight, gave the Mastodons their first season-sweep over defending conference champion North Dakota State since joining The Summit League in the 2007-08 season.
The 'Dons controlled a majority of the first half by going inside to the 6'10" sophomore. McCorkle responded by scoring 13 in the opening session and pacing IPFW to a 33-29 lead at the break.
North Dakota State (10-15, 7-8 SL) went on a 6-0 run to open the second half getting layups by junior forward Michael Tveidt and sophomore forward Eric Carlson and a pair of free throws by senior guard Austin Pennick.
The Bison would open up their biggest lead of the game at 52-47 as Tveidt got a fast-break basket off of a feed from freshman guard Josh Vaughn at the 11:20 mark.
McCorkle cut that lead to three with a tip-in, but twisted an ankle on the play. IPFW's leading scorer had to go to the bench. Head Coach Dane Fife subbed with Yearby and the senior responded.
After a free throw, Yearby blocked a shot and drilled a 3-pointer in transition. He stole a pass on the next possession and went the length of the floor for the layin. He knocked down a jumper and sank four free throws for a personal 12-0 run, part of a 15-0 run, that gave the 'Dons a 56-54 lead.
Junior guards Ben Botts, who started off the 15-0 run with a triple, and Zach Plackemeier hit crucial foul shots for the 'Dons down the stretch to seal the win.
"Deilvez comes off the bench and makes some really good plays," Fife said. "You can't overlook the job that Plackemeier and (Nick) Daniels have been doing the last two games and mainly all year on the defensive end. We got some really good play out of our bench. I thought Jeremy (Mixon) did a nice job. I thought (Brandon) Gaines did a nice job, and I thought Trey McCorkle was really tough to guard down low. Trey continues to improve and his confidence keeps growing and growing."
North Dakota State was led in scoring by Carlson with 13. Tveidt chipped in 12, while senior forward Sam Sussenguth added 10.
Four Mastodons scored in double-digits. Along with McCorkle's 21, Yearby had 15. Botts posted 12, while Daniels added 10.
IPFW shot 49.0% from the floor, while NDSU hit on 41.7% of their shots. The Bison outrebounded IPFW, 39-27.
With the win, IPFW evens its record at 13-13 and 8-8 in conference play. The Mastodons slip ahead of North Dakota State into fifth place in The Summit League.
IPFW will host fourth-place South Dakota State on Saturday afternoon. The tip is set for 2:00 p.m. following the women's game that begins at noon.
