Kansas City, MO – In a game that featured nine ties and 15 lead changes, the IPFW Mastodons fell in a heartbreaker, 64-61 to the Kangaroos of UMKC on Monday evening in Summit League action.
IPFW got a game-high 16 points off of the bench from Eva Ivanova, who made 4-of-5 three-point baskets, as Anne Boese scored 14 and Stephanie Rosado 12. Chelsey Jackson narrowly missed double figures with nine points, but dished out a game-high eight assists, one off of her career-high set against Oral Roberts. Jordan Zuppe, who was held scoreless for the first time this season, grabbed a team-best six rebounds.
With the loss, IPFW evens their record at 13-13 this season, and falls to 10-5 in league play. UMKC improves to a game under .500 at 12-13, and 9-5 in conference play. Oral Roberts currently leads the Summit League with a 12-3 record, with South Dakota State just behind with a 11-3 mark in league games. Oakland, who beat Southern Utah tonight sits in the third spot in the conference with a 11-4 record, with UMKC standing just ahead of North Dakota State, who is 8-6 in the league this season.
IPFW jumped on the board quickly when Rosdo hit a lay-in 15 seconds into the contest, before Chazny Morris hit a three-point basket on UMKC's next possession, giving UMKC a 3-2 lead, the first time in the last five games the 'Dons have trailed in regulation.
Sydney Weinert answered back quickly with a lay-in before Chelsey Jackson drilled a three-point basket to give IPFW a 7-3 lead. The Mastodon lead twice reached six points, the first after an Boese three-pointer, and the second after an Ivanova triple, the latter of the pair coming with 12:50 remaining on the first-half clock.
UMKC, who finished the first half one three-pointer shy of the single-half school record, got back-to-back triples from Morris to tie the score at 19. Leading 24-21 after a Rosado lay-in with 7:57 left on the clock, the Kangaroos ran off ten straight points, including an individual 8-0 run by guard Heather Davis, giving the hosts a seven-point, 31-27 lead.
IPFW ran off seven straight points of their own, capped by Jackson's second three-point basket of the half, tying the game at 31. Davis' third three-point basket of the first half put the hosts ahead by three, before a pair of Ivanova free throws with 1:19 to play in the half sent the 'Dons into the locker room with a one-point, 34-33 deficit.
The second half was a nip-and-tuck battle for the entire 20 minutes, with the largest lead gained by either team in the frame being four, as there were six ties and 10 lead changes over the final period. Jade Tinner, who had been held scoreless in the first half, came out and scored on each of UMKC’s first two possessions of the half; however, a Boese three-point basket a minute into the second half tied the game at 38 apiece.
UMKC led by four after a Kim Nezianya basket, before IPFW responded with a three-pointer from Boese, and a Rosado jumper to take a one-point lead with 9:48 to play in the contest. Sam Sikkink followed with a three-pointer, before Sarah Haluska got a quick put-back on a missed shot. Dayon Hall-Jones followed with a running jumper in the middle of the lane, and a Mariah Davis free throw gave the hosts a three-point lead with just over seven minutes left before Haluska drained a triple along the right baseline to re-tie the score at 56.
A Hall-Jones basket was followed by an Ivanova three-pointer, and a Heather Davis three was answered by a jumper by Boese, re-tying the score at 61 apiece. Morris made a pair of charity stripe attempts with 2:47 left in the game, giving the hosts a two-point lead, and IPFW could not answer, forcing the Mastodons to foul, as Hall-Jones made one of two free throws to push the lead to three.
Rosado’s three-point miss was rebounded by Ivanova, who found Boese, and the sophomore’s shot was narrowly off the mark, and Nezianya came down with the rebound for the Kangaroos, securing the three-point UMKC win.
IPFW made 23-of-55 shots (41.8 percent) in the game, and 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from long range, and a season-low-tying three free throws in four attempts from the charity stripe. UMKC made 24-of-55 shots from the field (43.6 percent), and season-high ten three-point baskets on 20 attempts, while converting on 6-of-9 shots from the free throw line.
UMKC had just two players finish with double-figure points, led by Morris’ 13, 11 of which came in the opening half. Heather Davis scored 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from long range, as Mariah Davis scored just five points, but pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, seven of those coming on the offensive end.
IPFW returns home for their final two regular season home games of the season, as the 'Dons host South Dakota State on Saturday, February 20 at noon at the Memorial Coliseum, and then host North Dakota State for senior night at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center on Monday, February 22 at 7:00 PM.
