Mastodons Sit in 9th Place at Pat Hicks Invitational

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Despite gusting winds and mild temperatures, the IPFW men's golf team opened its 2010 spring season on Monday at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah. After the first day of play, the Mastodons sit in 9th place out of the 11 team field.
IPFW fired a 306 on day one, trailing tournament leader and host Southern Utah by 16 strokes. The `Dons are two strokes ahead of Butler University and six shots past Seattle University.
After a pair of 37s, Jon Balyeat led IPFW in the opening round with a two-over 74. He stands in a tie for 18th place overall in the individual competition.
Bruno Carvalho fired a 76 on day one, shooting two nine-hole scores of 38. The freshman is tied for 36th place overall.
Drew Imel is tied for 45th place after firing a 77. Tomaz Pinheiro shot a 79, good enough for a tie for 56th place. And Ryan Olbin rounded out the Mastodon scoring with an 80.
Curtis Coverstone competed individually for the 'Dons, managing an 82 in round one. Coverstone sits in 64th place overall.
The second and final round will take place tomorrow morning with a shotgun start, beginning promptly at 8:00 a.m.
