Lexington, KY - No. 22 Kentucky used the longball to top IPFW, 10-1 on Friday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Wildcats (11-2) manufactured a run in the third and got a solo homer from second baseman Gunner Glad in the fourth. It was Glad's first homer of the season.
Leading 3-0 in the sixth, UK got a three-run blast from catcher Marcus Nidiffer to take a 6-0 lead.
In the 7th inning, lighting struck again as center fielder Keenan Wiley drilled a three-run shot over the green monster in right center to give the 22nd ranked 'Cats a 9-0 lead.
IPFW would get one back in their half of the seventh from the bat of junior right fielder Daren Boss. Boss cranked a frozen-rope out of left field off of UK starter Logan Darnell. It was one of the few mistakes he would make on the night. The Boss blast snapped a 19.1 inning scoreless streak for Darnell.
He left the game in the 9th inning, giving way to Walter Wijas who set down the 'Dons in order. Kentucky plated their final run in the bottom of the 8th inning for the 10-1 win.
Darnell went 8.0 innings for his third win of the season (3-0). He scattered five hits, striking out six while walking three.
IPFW starter Sam Walker took the loss (0-2). Walker gave up two runs (both earned) in 3.1 innings of work. He struck out five and walked four.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 1-10 on the season. The game, originally slated to begin at 4:00 p.m., was delayed three hours and fifteen minutes due to rain. IPFW will take on Kentucky again Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. weather permitting.
