
Kesterson Pitches IPFW past Western Illinois

Macomb, IL - IPFW junior starter Lucas Kesterson gave up just five hits over 7.1 innings on Sunday as IPFW took the Summit League series finale over Western Illinois, 5-3 at Al Boyer Stadium.
IPFW took three of four from the Leathernecks over the weekend and improve to 7-26 and 3-5 in Summit League play.
The Mastodons cracked the scoring column in the 2nd inning. Right fielder Joel Washko drove in a pair with a single through the right side of the Leatherneck infield. Jordan Kohler, who had double, and Brendan Landwerh, who reached on a walk, both scored on the play.
The 'Dons stretched their lead to 3-0 in the fifth on an RBI double by designated hitter Brett Clark.
The lead ballooned to 5-0 in the 8th inning. Kohler would score on a bunt single by shortstop Will Faulkner. Faulkner would advance to second on the play due to a WIU throwing error. Faulkner would score a batter later on an RBI double by Daren Boss.
Western Illinois (9-23, 2-6 SL) finally got to Kesterson in the 8th inning. After two out in the inning, second baseman Cole Waddell lifted a two-run homer out of left center to draw the Leathernecks to within three at 5-2.
Reliever Brandon Knowling came on to get the final out of the inning. Knowling would give up a run in the 9th inning, but closed the game out for his first save of the season.
Kesterson struck out three and walked two in winning his first game of the season (1-5).
WIU starter Travis Pedersen took the loss (0-1). He gave up three runs on four hits over 4.0 innings. He struck out three and walked three.
IPFW returns to action on Tuesday with a non-conference game at Valparaiso. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
